The rumors were true as Apple posted a pre-recorded digital event this morning that announced the M2 Pro and Max System on Chips as well as updated MacBook Pros and Minis.
The M2 Pro and M2 Max
The main announcement today was the uprated additions to the M2 line of SOCs. Like the M2, the Pro and Max include the Performance, efficiency, and the graphics cores of the the A15, but are built an improved 5nm process.
The M2 Pro includes a binned 10- CPU 16- GPU core model as well as a standard 12-CPU and 19 GPU core Model. The Neural engine and media engine have been enhanced. The unified memory is still soldered and maxes out at 32GB.
The M2 Max once again matches the number of CPU cores of the Pro, but comes in 30 and 36-core GPU options. They also increased the max memory from 64GB to 96GB. This is the most memory ever allowed on an Apple Laptop.
Updated MacBook Pros
With the new chips, come new Macs. The star of the show is the new MacBook Pros. You’re not going to see much difference in the exterior or the price point, they are the exact same as their M1 Pro/ M1 Max processors. The new machines gain all the improvements of the new chips plus Wi-Fi 6E and an updated HDMI port that supports 8k output. Maximum battery life is now up to 22 hours.
End the Mini Intel Era
The rumor mill was spot on with the Mac Mini. The M1 Mac Mini as replaced by a new M2 model, but it was not the only one. The Intel model finally saw its end with with a M2 Pro announced. Unlike the M2 MacBook Air, the M2 Mini includes a pair of Thunderbolt 4 ports instead of the USB 4 with Thunderbolt Ports in the laptop. The M2 Pro model includes 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports like its Intel predecessor.
The M2 Mini got a $100 price drop from the M1 Model to $599 for the 256GB Model and $799 512GB Model. The M2 Pro Mini starts at $1299. Both the new MacBook Pros and Mac Mini ship 01/24/2023.
